It actually has nothing in common with the Defender other than the fact it was built by Santana of Spain, builder of licensed Defenders

Yep, the Massif. It has related DNA, but it’s more of a Series V than a 110. That is, if you treat the Santana Defender-like as a Series IV, and since this is an update of that.

Santana also made their own Forward Controls, the 1300 (pictured), and the 2000, which is kind of like the 101.

I occasionally see a PS-10 like this and at first (and second) glance it looks just like a Land Rover.

Complete with luxury leaf springs! The interiors were also poor off to the latest Defender (2007 on). The Santanas about seem to be in poor condition too.

It would be more appropriate to say that Santana built Land Rover Series 2 and 3 under licence.

Santana never used coil springs in their Land Rovers whereas all Defenders are fitted with a coil-sprung chassis.

Defenders (or more correctly put, LR 90s and 110s) appeared practically at the same time Santana and Land Rover finished their licensing agreement, so no relation between the two.

Some people who love the leaf-sprung versions of Land Rover consider Santanas to be a sort of Series 3+ due to a few interesting detail improvements (parabolic springs, disc brakes, one-piece windscreen, GRP roof panel, etc) that were never made to the Series 3.

The PS10 has a military version, Aníbal (Sp for “Hannibal”) which looked very nice indeed (and I don’t particularly like Santanas).

On paper the spec was very good too, but quality control was traditionally hit and miss at Santana. I ignore if in later years (with Iveco) that was still the case, but bad reputation is very difficult to shake off.

Allegedly the Massif was a PS10 with styling touches by Giugiaro (or was it ItalDesign)? Definitely not successful... shades of Morris Ital?
